"Promise me you'll always remember......"

FAREWELL LITTLE BUMBLES

I’m glad I was your teacher
I’ve come to love you so.
I can’t bee-lieve the end is here.
It’s time I let you spread your
Wings and soar.
You’re such a star
And I love you so dearly.
You put the buzz in my life
I mean that sincerely.
Remember all the fun we had
In all the things we did.
But, most of all remember..
It’s the belief in ourselves that
Helps us take flight!
Love, Mrs. Seirer

MY FAVORITE BOOK

Dear Parents,
The children enjoyed reading and responding to the story "My Favorite Book". Each year several Clay Center business' donate these books so that each child may have their own copy. We wrote thank you messages and mailed to those business groups. At the website you can read the story online and play a few games. You will need to log in and create a password. (www.myfavoritebookland.com) Thank you for helping your child do their best and be the best that they can be!

TECHNOLGY THURSDAY

This will be our last day to visit the computer lab! The children always look forward to "Technology Thursday". I hope during the summer that they will revisit the hive and play some of their favorite games. Over the summer it is good to stay in touch with learning activities so that by the beginning of second grade they still have some knowledge of material learned. If I could recommend one skill to work on over the summer it would be mastery of addition and subtraction facts. Encourage your child to practice math facts! Keep in touch with writing by keeping a summer journal of fun activities. I promise to answer any emails or letters sent! Until next year.....wishing you many sunshine days!

ANIMAL SHOWROOM

I would like to give a very big SPECIAL THANKS to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bowman of Wakefield. They opened up their Animal Showroom for the First Graders to tour. It's not every day that you find a person in your community as informed on wild animals. Tom has traveled the world on animal hunts. If you have free time this summer you should contact Tom and schedule a visit. Kathleen treated the children to cookies and a drink. We have the most wonderful people in our community who take very good care of the school children!

LIBRARY VISIT

The First Graders visited the Wakefield Public Library on Monday. I would like to thank Mrs. Braden and Kim for taking time to visit with the children about the summer reading program. Each program consists of a story, activity/craft and snack. I hope my little bumbles will be able to attend the summer sessions. Dig in and read on!

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Children learn best when their learning is not interrupted. And summer vacation is a long interruption. Without practice, children forget facts and important, "how to" skills. They fall behind because they don't practice this skills daily. Avoid the summer slide by taking your child to the library! It is proven that reading at least 8 books can create a bridge between June and August. Please take advantage of the opportunities at our public library! Sign up for the summer reading program and attend the storytimes. Plan to beat the "Summer Slide"!

This summer’s reading theme is “DIG INTO READING"! The first graders are going to love this! The children are visiting the Wakefield Public Library on Monday, May 20 to learn more about the summer reading program. It's all free and fun! Hope to see you at the library this summer!

TECHNOLOGY THURSDAY

The children have been learning about Measurement in Math. They've used inches and centimeters rulers to explore length. I have found these websites that give extra support in measuring.

LIFECYCLES

The children just completed a study of the Lifecycle of the Darkling Beetle. I've never heard so much enthusiasm and excitement when they discovered their mealworms had changed! Enjoy this little peek into a day of science in the First Grade classroom. Hopefully the beetles made it home and safely deposited outside into the world!

FINAL TESTING WEEK

This week the children will be taking the end of the year tests in reading and math. We are not working on a new story. There will be no new spelling words or vocabulary words sent home. This is the final week for homework and Watch Me Read books. My plans are to finalize the grades and get everything ready for checkout. If your child still has library books out, please help them remember to return. Only 9 more days left in First Grade!

EXPLORING MEASUREMENT

Dear Parents, I hope you'll drop in to watch this movie of the children exploring measurement. The earthworms were a big hit! The children had a wonderful time using their measurement tools. I am still laughing at some of their comments. You will feel their excitement! Enjoy.....Mrs. Seirer
