GROUNDHOG DAY

Looking forward to Groundhog day on Sunday, February 2. If Phil doesn't see his shadow..he'll predict an early spring! It's so hard to make our predictions with one day warm and the next freezing cold! The children sure enjoy going outside on the nice days. Below are games the children can play in honor of Groundhog's Day! The first game is a memory matching activity with a hidden picture! Here's to spring!

BOMBER CHEER CLINIC

We are proud to announce that the Bomber Cheer squad will sponsor a Cheer Clinic. All girls grades K-8 are invited to attend. The cost is $15. (Please fill form out for each girl but you may write one check per family payable to Wakefield School.) Our theme this year is “Cowgirls Rule”.

The clinic will be Saturday, February 8 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. We will meet in the lunchroom. Enter through the door by the lunchroom. Each girl will be taught 1 dance routine, cheers, and other cheer related skills. Each girl will receive a t-shirt. We will have pizza for lunch. The routine will be performed at the halftime of the boy’s varsity basketball game on Tuesday, February 11. The night of the game each girl will be asked to wear the T-shirt with comfortable shorts or sweats for the performance. We would also like the girls to wear their cheer shirts to school on this day. They will perform at the Pep Rally.

The evening of the game each girl will attend the games for free. The cost for family members is $4 for adults and $3 for students. Checks for the clinic can be made out to Wakefield School. The registration form and money are due by MONDAY, JANUARY 27. (No refunds if not able to attend.) If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Seirer. The Bomber Cheer squad is looking forward to working with your girls, so please sign up.

We have started new skill groups. My group is focusing on blends. (Tested blends are: sp,mp,nt,st,nd,cl,tr, sn,pr,sl) Blends are 2 letters that make both sounds and can be found at the beginning and end of words. Here are some websites that reinforce the blend sounds.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is about teaching school children how to keep fit and healthy. Conducted by school teachers, children learn physical activities like rope-jumping to improve their strength, gaining confidence and stamina to extend their physical abilities elsewhere.

Students who participate in Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart have lots of fun with their peers. At the same time they are learning about helping save lives by asking family and friends to sponsor them for being a part of this fun program. Funds raised go towards research to help the fight against heart disease and stroke.

During the next 2 weeks in PE class Coach Seirer is teaching the children all kinds of jump rope games. If your child is interested (not required) in being a part of this program review the information sent home today. Money collected is due by January 24. Email Coach Seirer (rockyseirer@usd379.org) or contact him at the school.(785-461-5437) It takes a HEART to be a HERO....HaPpY Jumping!

100th DAY OF SCHOOL

Please be sure that you read and return the 100th Day of School note sent home on Friday, January 10. The children are traveling to Clay Center on Tuesday, January 28th for an all district First Grade celebration. I will need to pre-order lunches. I need to let the lunch program people know. On Wednesday, January 29th (if we don't have any more snow days) it will be the 100th Day of School. The children will need to have a collection of 100 items in class to share. It's not a good idea to wait to the last minute to prepare for this special day. Please have your child start thinking of the 100 items they would like to bring. Get their collections ready and into the books bags early. The collections are worth points for a grade. I will send another reminder note! Also, I will need volunteers to bake cupcakes for our 100 Day Celebration on the 29th.

NEW LIFT GROUPS

Today the children met with their new LIFT groups. The First Graders are either repeating a DIGRAPH (letters that go together to make one sound) class or starting in the next class which is the BLENDS (2 letters that go together and make 2 sounds) class. Digraphs tested are sh,th,ng,ck,ch,wh. Blends assessed are sp,mp,nt,st,nd,cl,tr,sn,pr,sl. The children did very well on the reading of sentences during the winter testing. They fell short on reading nonsense words. We will work on this every day during the next session of LIFT. As you read with your child be sure to point out words with blends and digraphs.

TESTING WEEK

The children are taking a reading assessment test this week. There will be no new spelling words to study. Please help your child study the vocabulary words sent home today in their homework packet. There are 30 new words in Level 1.3 that your child will need to be able to read. THANK YOU for supporting your child!
