The First Graders have once again worked hard on good behaviors! The children have earned 100 marbles for being shining stars! Their reward is a "Pajama Day" on Friday, Feb. 17. Please remind your child to wear their PJ's and bring a stuffed animal. If they have bedtime books they enjoy....please send! We'll snuggle up with a good bedtime story and enjoy some quiet time.

FIRST GRADERS CELEBRATE 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL

The First Graders celebrated 100 Days of school on Thursday, January 26. The children brought 100 things to share with special visitors. First Graders were recognized for their outstanding job writing numbers to 1,000. Kyra won the 100 Day Balloon which contained a surprise from the Wakefield Short Stop. Noah, Jada H. and Connor were honored for 99 days of PERFECT attendance! Joshua won the 100 Things We Have Learned in First Grade chain. I would like to thank all the First Grade parents for donating cupcakes for the celebration. Your support helped to make the celebration a wonderful day!

SOIL CONSERVATION CONTEST

First Graders once again have the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Soil Conservation Poster Contest. The poster contest is one of many ways that we present conservation education to students in Clay County. For younger students, it often serves as an introduction to conservation and the Conservation District.

This year the theme is "Soil to Spoon". Information is being sent home today. Posters are due by Wednesday, January 25. No names are to appear on the front of the poster. The information page will need to be taped on the back of the poster. Posters need to be returned flat - no rolling the paper. Here is a link to the website where you can read about the contest. It's our last Thursday for the month of December to be in the lab! With the holiday break we won't be back for computers until January 5,2012! The children are doing such a wonderful job learning that each day seems to fly by. Now a semester is about to come to a close. With the trends of technology constantly changing we now have the opportunity to stay updated with the new ipads teachers received today! I'm so excited to have a school ipad that can stay in the class where the children have access to the newest and best apps! We hope to soon have ipad mobile carts for our students. The children are so excited for Technology Thursday this week! I promised that as soon as I got home from basketball practice that I would post the sites they will explore in the lab this week. We always preview the sites on Wednesdays. I don't think Thursday can get here soon enough! I wished we had a movie camera running in the classroom so that you could experience the joy and blessings of reading Charlotte's Web. The children look forward to the new chapter each day. This story brings back many childhood memories as I too grew up on a farm. We didn't have pigs but we did have the most wonderful barn! My brothers and I spent many hours playing in the barn. I feel Christmas in the air....with snow in the forecast for Thursday evening!

On Tuesday, November 22 we will have a Thanksgiving gathering with our 2nd grade Native American Friends. Our activities will begin after lunch at 12:15. The children are making costumes here at school. Even Mrs. Koerner and Mrs. Seirer will be in costumes! If the children have something black or gray they can wear that day it would work fine. Girls will need to have hair down so that the bonnets will fit. Also, if the girls have an apron at home they may bring it to school that day. I have several extra aprons here at school. We are serving apples, popcorn, cornbread, homemade butter, and apple juice at our feast. Please do not send in any baked items or extra food. We will have plenty for the feast. Those called who are helping with food for this activity are:

EARLY RELEASE DAY

A note was sent home today to remind parents and care givers that the students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Teachers will be attending meetings to discuss Safe and Civil Schools. Elementary teachers will also be meeting to evaluate and resign LIFT groups. We appreciate this time to collaborate and plan!

HOMECOMING PARADE

On Friday, October 14 Wakefield School will celebrate Homecoming. We are playing the Pike Valley Panthers . The First Graders will participate in the Homecoming Parade. The parade begins at 2:15 p.m. in the front of school. It ends at the football field. We will watch the parade as it passes by school and join in at the end. We hope the children will wear their Flyer T-shirts or our school colors of blue and white. The cheerleaders are also selling tattoos for Homecoming and game days. Eye Blacks are $2.00 and single tattoos are 50 cents. Tattoos may be purchased from a cheerleader or from Mrs. Seirer. The children will be dismissed at regular time on Friday. The crowning of the queen and king will be prior to the game. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Come and support the Bombers!

Be sure and help your child at home check out these websites. Several LIFT groups have been working on CVC patterns. (consonant-vowel-consonant) The reading site reinforces using short vowel sounds. In math many of the children still need pictures or hands on counters to solve addition problems. The math web game has great visual pictures to use in counting. Wishing you all a wonderful day!

FALL FEST IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES

We are home after a trip to see the colors and hear the sounds of autumn in the Rocky Mountains. Our trip was very refreshing and relaxing. I thought of the children often and brought back some surprises for them. Thank you to Mrs. Frigon for being a wonderful substitute and taking good care of my bumbles!

HEADING WEST

Coach Seirer and I are heading to the mountains for one of my favorite times of the year! I've told the children that I'm on my way to see Santa's reindeer. We'll be spending 4 days in Estes Park for Elk Fest. If you've never heard an elk bugle it is the most amazing experience. The aspen trees are just beautiful. It's the peak time for Autumn in the Rocky Mountains!

VICEROY BUTTERFLY

The children had fun today observing the Viceroy butterflies. (Also known as the Painted Lady butterfly.) Here is some information on the Viceroy. It is easily confused with the Monarch due to the similarity of colors. Happy Butterfly hunting!

The viceroy butterfly is dark orange with black veins. A row of white spots edge its wings. Its color and pattern mimics the monarch butterfly's pattern except for a black horizontal stripe that crosses the bottom of its back wings. The viceroy caterpillar is white and olive-brown.

STAR WORDS

I have encouraged the children as they practice words at home to have a parent put a star on each word they can read. After the word receives 5 stars then we can consider the word mastered. Once a week I check the words for stars. Those with stars on their words receive a treat! Please feel welcome to put a star on the words your child knows as you practice together! LIFT is short for.....Learning is Fun Together! Monday the children will be starting new learning groups. LIFT is a time where students will work in small groups on reading skills in concentrated lessons. Groups are mixed with students from grades K-2. Students will remain with the same group until our next PLC Day on October 12. Each child has been evaluated and placed according to their needs. The students will be pre and post tested during their LIFT time to monitor their progress. There are 7 staff members working with groups during our LIFT time. Groups vary from Letter sounds, Consonant Vowel Consonant patterns, Silent E, Blends, Digraphs, and advanced skills such as R-Controlled Vowels and Consonant Clusters, Silent Consonants and Consonant Digraphs. I will be supervising 2 groups during this first session. One group of 5 will work with Letter Sounds. The other group of 3 will work on advanced skills. At parent teacher conferences I will share more information on MTSS and the strategies we are using to improve our reading program.

Time for Technology Thursday! This week in the lab the first graders will work with spelling city. It is a favorite for spelling practice. Today we previewed the games of Unscramble and Hang Mouse. The children have been working on their first list of spelling words. The final test is Friday. The Spelling City website offers a variety of word spelling games. Good Luck First Graders!

EARLY DISMISSAL

A reminder that Wednesday, September 14 the students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. The staff will be attending inservice meetings until 3:30. We are looking forward to discussing data collected and strategies for MTSS. MTSS is short for Multi-Tier System of Supports. Group support time is referred to as "LIFT" - Learning is Fun Together! Our students are evaluated and placed in learning groups that best fit their educational needs. I will visit more about MTSS at parent teacher conferences.

SPELLING

The children are so ready to begin weekly spelling tests! First Graders are bringing home a note and list of spelling words today. Several passed the pre-test at 100% and are receiving a list of special words. Please encourage your child to learn to spell as many special words as they can. They are only bonus words and will not count on their final grade. Spelling Recognition Awards will be presented at the Awards Program at the end of the school year. Help your child choose a few from the special list or they may attempt all 6 special words. I'm doing a HaPpY dance because I have such a smart group of students!
