NO SCHOOL MONDAY
A reminder that school will not be in session on Monday, September 28. Teachers will be in inservice meetings. This weekend please check your child's Yellow Go Home folder for work that needs to be completed. The 3 day break allows the children to have plenty of time to log in minutes of reading!! Last week the total minutes of reading for both classes was 2,145 minutes. I'm VERY PROUD of the children for making it over the 2,000 min. mark!! Yea, for the BEES!!
LAUREN-STUDENT OF THE WEEK
TRIP TO THE ARBORETUM
On Friday, October 2 the 1st and 2nd Graders will be taking a trip to the Wakefield Arboretum. We will leave at 12:30 pm and arrive back to school by 2:45 pm. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately with good walking shoes on and bring a light jacket in case the weather is cool. I would also encourage every student to have a bottle of water. We are studying plants and seeds in Science. Kristen (a biologist) from the area Wildlife and Parks Dept will be meeting the classes at the Arboretum to guide us on a hike. I hope that all of the children are working on their seed collections. The collections are due on Monday, October 5. I have shared all the egg cartons that I have at this time. If your child still needs an egg carton you can check back with me or ask a friend. Looking forward to a fabulous Fun Friday next week!!

FALL IN THE MOUNTAINS
The mountains are calling me and I saw go!! Coach Seirer and I are heading to Colorado to view the beautiful aspen trees as they are turning colors. I will be bringing back some of the leaves that we'll be using in Science class. We are looking forward to cooler weather and watching the elk as this is the time of the year when they are very active. Listening to the males bugle is amazing. If we're lucky we might even see some moose! Mrs. Koerner will take good care of my bumbles while I'm gone. I'll be back Thursday, Sept. 24.

BEFORE SCHOOL CHANGE
Starting Monday, September 21 all elementary students will need to report to the new gym before school. The students will no longer be outside in the mornings. The students may sit and visit with their classmates. Mr. Sturges is making this change due to only 1 teacher being assigned supervision duty. This way the teacher can better monitor all the children. Please remind your child to report to the new gym when arriving to school. Classes line up by 8:05 and will be dismissed to their classrooms. The tardy bell rings at 8:10. The First and Second Grades are doing a great job being on time. We have now earned 2 No Tardy Tator Awards!! Our first class begins at 8:15 so I appreciate parents having their children at school on time.

PATHWAYS TO READING
We are very excited about the Pathways to Reading program. (PTR) This program will greatly benefit our students in the ability to sound out words, understand what they read, and read fluently. The primary focus of PTR is to understand and apply the five scientifically validated core components of the reading process. The five core components are:
Phonemic Awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension
The relationship of the five components is presented in the Simple View of Reading (Gough, Juel, & Griffith, 1992) – pictured above.
Decoding (the ability to figure out words) and Comprehension (the ability to interact with the meaning of text) are skills necessary for independent reading. There are specific skills and tasks for each of the five components of the reading process that impact a student's ability to learn to read.
Tuesday, Sept. 8 we will begin Large Group Instruction in First and Second Grade. I will spend several days building Vowel Town. The students will learn how to produce sounds correctly, how to pull sounds apart (segment) when sounding out words. Second Graders will progress to working with multi-syllable words. Small Group instruction will begin on Lesson 11. (Sept. 22) I am teaching the Large Groups and Mrs. Thomas (Reading Specialist) and Mrs. Mellies (Instructional Aide) is teaching the Small Groups.
Spelling will become a part of this program for the First Graders during the Second Nine Weeks. Second Graders will begin spelling the Week of Sept. 14 - 18. Each week there will be 10 words that we will work on. 1 of these words will be a "Mystery Word". It's new and exciting!! I'm confident our students will become better readers with this program!

VOCABULARY WORDS
Each week I am sending home a note with the sight words we are working on. I will also post the words on the Happy Hive. Parents can help their child at home by studying these words. You can make your child word cards to study. These words are tested each week by using them in sentences. This is not a spelling test. These are reading words we use in our stories. Here are the words for the Week of August 24 and the Week of August 31.

A VISIT TO THE CITY BUILDING
The First and Second Graders visited the City Building in Wakefield this past week. The students have been learning about laws and rules in Social Studies. They enjoyed sitting in the mayor's and city council seats pretending that they were at a council meeting. A special thanks to City Clerk Jeri Mason for taking time to visit with the children.
