The past week was such a busy one! I sure wasn't ready for the snow. The cold weather kept me inside and I was able to get caught up with grading many tests. Although I did find time to read a book this weekend! This past week the children began in Level 1.5 reading. The focused comprehension skill was predicting. This week our story will focus on comparing and contrasting. Vowel patterns in spelling and phonics will be Long a as in ai and ay. Final assessment of Level 1.4 Skills Test will be sent home on Monday.

The children have completed the unit in place value, maps, and graphs. Final test grades are posted and will be sent home on Monday. Since the start of the new year our math has been very intense. The children have covered many major skills in our curriculum standards. Our next unit is on Geometry and Fractions. This will be a quick unit loaded with lots of fun with shapes! The children will be making addition flash cards and working on mastering facts addition facts during the month of April.

This week we are looking forward to two special programs. On Thursday, the Ladies Pilot Club from Clay Center is coming down to visit with the children about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. They will give away a certificate for a free bike helmet. On Friday, we have an IDL program titled, "Soaring High With Kites". I thought we would be able to make-up our missed reading day at the nursing home on Friday, but with this program we will not be able to. We've missed 2 months now due to illness and weather. Our next Nursing Home Reading Day will be Friday, April 24. Surely we will not be having bad weather then! April 1 arrives on Wednesday. Hopefully you won't get tricked by any April Fool's jokes!

We're back from a wonderful Spring Break vacation. I have felt summer this past week in California. Mr. Seirer and I spent the week visiting my brother in Los Angeles and resting and relaxing at a resort in Palm Springs. Saw 3 Pacific gray whales while on a whale watching cruise out of Long Beach. The children probably enjoyed the week off as much as I did! We'll have many exciting stories to share this week. Time is slipping away - only 9 weeks (43 days) left and so much left to learn!

Hope everyone sprung forward and is not to tired today! The kids were just great this morning. Maybe that is because they were still in their sleepy mode. Spelling will be a bit different this week since we are taking a reading skills assessment test. I gave the children a practice test today which consisted of 30 words first graders use in their daily writing and reading. Most of the words have been on previous tests. I'm proud that they have learned how to spell these words!

With no school on Friday I decided to give the kids another day to return their book order money. Please on Tuesday remember to have book order money and pictures/money turned in. Thank you!

During spring break the children might want to work on their puppet for the Puppet show. This is a required activity and the show will be video taped. I'm looking forward to "Show Time" in April.

Thank you to the parents who have given me notice that they are leaving a few days early for spring break. This allows me to finish up testing and get scores in before your child leaves. Progress Reports are handed out on Friday. For those leaving early I'll try and get your child's report to you. Dakota is headed to Pennsylvania (now that is a good spelling word for her - I even had to look this one up), Laredo is going to Corpus Christi, Logan to Branson, MO and Mrs. Seirer is headed to sunny California on Friday! We'll spend the week in Los Angeles with my brother having fun at the beach, and then on to Palm Springs for some rest and relaxation at a resort! Only 4 more days . . . .

What a busy and short week! Today is the end of the nine weeks. Tomorrow is a Teacher Inservice and workday. We will have progress reports ready to send home on Friday, March 13. In Reading we have finished the last stories in Level 1.4 and will be testing next week. I will also be giving vocabulary tests during this time. With the 3 day weekend it would be a good idea to review words with your child. I'm so proud of our 1st Grade Reading Superstars! During the month of February our students read 330 books! Today I'm treating the class to ice cream bars!

Math has kept us busy with learning about expanded form and regrouping this week. The children think they are doing magic when they are using the tens and ones place value models to perform regrouping! Homework this weekend should prepare them for a diagnostic checkup on Monday.

Savannah's mom shared a very cool website for spelling with me! www.spellingcity.com Your child can enter their spelling words, take practice lessons, play games, and be tested. It's just amazing! I will have this site bookmarked under "Learning Links" on our school K-5 web page. Thanks Julie!

It's feeling like SPRING in the air! Remember to set your clocks ahead Saturday night as we'll wake up 1 hour earlier on Sunday morning.
