WE'RE 100 DAY SMARTER!

The children had a wonderful time today celebrating the 100th Day of School. Each student brought collections of 100 things to display on their desk. We invited students from K-5th to view the collections. The Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Wakefield presented Attendance Awards. Congratulations to Cheyeanne on her Perfect 100 Days of Attendance. Marcus was runner - up with 99 Days of Perfect Attendance. Thank you to all the parents who donated cupcakes for our celebration of learning. I'm sure the children came home exhausted from their super fun day!!

TECHNOLOGY TUESDAY

In math the First Graders are working on creating Number Bonds. Number Bonds are numbers that belong in a fact family. Example:
2 + 4 = 6, 4 + 2 = 6, 6 - 2 = 4, 6 - 4 = 2. Here are some games the children will play in computer class this week to reinforce number bond skills. One of the math tools we use is a rekenrek (you might remember the abacus) to help group numbers as we count. 2 websites will provide practice seeing numbers using a rekenrek.

NEW LIFT GROUPS

Today the children met with their new LIFT groups. The First Graders are either in a BLENDS group (2 letters that go together and make 2 sounds) a SILENT E group (words that end with e making the vowel sound long) or a Comprehension group. Blends assessed are sp,mp,nt,st,nd,cl,tr,sn,pr,sl. As you read with your child be sure to point out words with blends and and silent e. The new spelling words in Level 1.4 will focus on the silent e. The children need to continue reading their "Watch Me Read" books every night. They were tested on reading fluency during the winter testing. If your child did not meet the target goal then they are placed in a progress monitor group. The more your child reads a better fluent reader they will become. I look forward to sharing testing results with you during Student Advisement/Conferences during Feb.23 - 26.

TESTING WEEK

The children are taking a reading assessment test this week. There will be no new spelling words to study. Please help your child study the vocabulary words sent home today in their homework packet. There are 30 new words in Level 1.3 that your child will need to be able to read. THANK YOU for supporting your child!

KING AND QUEEN OF COURTS

Friday night at the basketball game Tess and Markus helped crown our King and Queen of Courts. Tess carried the flowers. Markus carried the crown. They did an awesome job! Pictured is our 2014 Queen of Courts Alicia Jackson.
