Farewell to First Grade! The children will be packing up their things tomorrow. It's about time for them to take flight and leave the hive. They have grown tremendously this year! I feel blessed to have been part of their early academic years. Hopefully we have made memories that they will keep with them forever. I'm looking forward to presenting their awards Friday at the Recognition Awards Program. Thank you all for your support this year! Educating our students is a partnership that is so vital to their future success. We've made a great team this year!

Please remind your child to wear their Wakefield Flyer shirt on Friday if they have one. Also, the weather forecast is looking very warm for the Track Day. You might want to send some suntan lotion. The children will need to wear running shoes for the track events. No flip flops or sandals. An extra bottle of water and a beach towel would also be a good idea. Your child will need to bring their book bag on Friday as they will have a folder with awards to bring home.

The public library has invited all the children to sign up for summer reading. The program dates begin in June. (See information sent home.) I would encourage you to take your child to these programs. They are free and last about an hour. Keep a log of what your child reads this summer and share with Mrs. Koerner next August! My wish is that the children keep books in their hands and read, read, read!

The awards program begins at 8:30 a.m. in the new gym. Following the program your child will need a light snack picnic lunch. We'll eat and then head on down to the football field for the Track Day. The events begin at 10:45 a.m. Summer vacation begins at 1:00! Happy summer to all!

I can feel the summer breeze blowing in! The countdown is on! Only 9 more school days left. The children are busy with end of the year assessments in reading, math, and language. This is our last week for spelling. The final spelling list was sent home today. In math we are wrapping up 2 digit addition and subtraction. I'm seeing much improvement in subtraction! We take timed tests each Tuesday and Friday. We acknowledge and praise any growth made! I appreciate the support you give your child in working with the math facts. Thank you!

Please note that any money owed for lunches and milk are due in the office. Please keep balances paid. Library books are due and need to be checked in.

The school carnival was a success! THANK YOU to all for your donations for our basket and baked items for the cake walk. The kids had a blast and you parents probably went home tired. I know I did! The weather turned out nice which allowed us to be outside for the games.
A special thank you to our PTO board for their hard work and time in preparing for the carnival. We appreciate your dedication to our children!

First Graders visited the zoo today in Manhattan. Our Reptile ZOOventure program was full of excitement. Meet Shaggy a boa constrictor snake! Notice how brave the children are. They were anxious to pet the snake. I'm sure glad I was on camera duty! Thank you PTO for sponsoring the Reptile program!

The children learned all about turtles during the Reptile program. Did you know that the ornate box turtle (which is the Kansas State Reptile) is actually a tortoise?

What a fabulous spring music program last night! The kids did such a great job with their songs. Thank you parents for putting together some pretty cool costumes! There was lots of wool everywhere! I hope you had the opportunity to look at some of the art work. Mrs. Hammond does a wonderful job with our art program!

A reminder that tomorrow is our class trip to the Manhattan Sunset Zoo. The children will need to bring a picnic lunch. The bus leaves at 8:45 a.m. and we arrive back to school by 3:00 p.m. Looks like the weather will be perfect for our visit! Our ZOOventure class begins at 12:30. We will see up close and personal some very interesting REPTILES! Fun, fun . . . . .

As several of you noticed last night at our program our PATRIOTIC basket is in need of more items. I appreciate your support in making a donation! Brandy said that she has a really neat red, white and blue basket to put our items in. She will collect the items on Friday, so please have things here and ready for her. Hope to see you all at the carnival on Saturday!

Cheers to Jonathan! He has read 100 books in the accelerated reading program this year. We are very proud of you Jonathan. This is quite an accomplishment. We celebrated Friday with donuts at milk break.
