Phonic Fighters
Here is a link to a fun phonics game that we have been playing in the classroom. It is so important that the children know the names and sounds of letters. Any support you give your child at home will help them to be better readers!

Wreaths Across America
Students at Wakefield School are again collecting money for "Wreaths Across America". Wreaths Across America recognizes the cost of freedom. It is the wish of Wreaths Across America to bring veterans, their families, and our school children together, as a way of expressing appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices that preserve the freedom we experience each day. The money will be given to the VFW Auxiliary to be used to purchase Wreaths for Veterans graves. Any small amount of change will add up to a greater amount, so please remember our fallen soldiers. We only have until November 1 to collect our coins. Containers are placed in the classrooms. The class that collects the most will win a prize!

GYM DAYS
First Graders have gym on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Please encourage your daughter to wear an outfit that allows her to perform exercises and participate in the games. Coach Seirer would like the girls to not wear dresses on these days. Sweats, shorts, or long pants would work much better. Thank you!

SPELLING TESTS
The first graders have begun Unit 2 in Reading. In this unit they will learn to spell a group of words. Pre-tests are given on Mondays and list words are sent home. If your child passes, then he/she will receive challenge words. These words are not counted against the final grades, but used as enrichment. Grades will be given on the Friday final tests of regular list words. Please help your child practice list words at home. Reinforce the sound patterns in the words. This week the sound pattern is short a. Magnet letters on the refrigerator make a great source of review for your child. Happy Spelling!

FIRE SAFETY WEEK
This is FIRE SAFETY WEEK! Please take time to visit with your children about an escape plan and meeting place outside. It's important to have a plan in case there were ever to be a fire at your home. It's a good time to check smoke alarms and replace with new batteries. We will review fire safety rules, read books about firefighters, dress up in firefighter clothes, and do some acting out of Stop, Drop, and Roll. Fire Chief Maynard Sherbert and his firefighters will be here next week to talk about safety with the children. They are bringing a few of the trucks and have a short program for the children.
